Cooler Master V850 PCI-E cable problem

Hi Guys,

I just purchased a Cooler Master v850 PSU and I've been having some trouble with the PCI-E cables.

The cables are quite clearly labelled 'PSU' on one end and 'PCI-E' on the other, so there's little doubt which end goes where.

The problem is, the 8-pin connecter on the PSU side has a little plastic bridge between two pins preventing it from plugging in. You can see an example of what I mean here: http://www.playtool....tml#pciexpress8.

So, I'm not sure how I can get any suplemental power to my new graphics card (EVGA GeForce GTX780) and I'm at a loss as to why this type of cable would be included with the PSU if it doesn't fit.

All 4 PCI-E cables are the same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do I need an adapter or something?

you need to slide them in together and it will fit in then

Can you put a picture of your actual plugs up please? Don't really understand what youre saying.

I don't have it on my at the moment but you can see the problem in the following photos.

The PSU has the following slots (this is the exact psu):

You will see two 8-pin slots on the bottom row. These are intended to be used with 8-pin PCI-E cables. Pretty standard stuff.

The problem is that the PCI-E cables look like this:

If you look at this picture you will see that the top right pins are connected with each other. This prevents these cables from fitting into the 8-pin slots on the PSU.

I hope this clears it up a bit. Take a close look at the pictures.

The cable end that has the plastic"bridge" plugs into the video card, not the power supply

. Sounds like someone just mislabeled the ends on the cable. If you need confirmation for this, look at the adapter they send with the video card, it has the same bridge. If your card didnt come with one, ill put pics of the one that came with my evga sc gtx 770

I'll have another look when I get home this afternoon but I'm pretty sure both ends are the same.

The end with the 'bridge' (as I call it) WILL fit into the video card so that's not a problem, but it won't go into the PSU.

I spent about an hour fiddling around with different adapters etc and I believe I also tried reversing the cable.

Will update later tonight with some photos.

Another thought, the gpu end of the cable should be a 6+2 cable, so the last 2 pins should break away from the plug.

Could be you got some defective cables then, according to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171079 there are no actual 8 pin pcie connectors on the PSU, just 6+2's.

yes then its fine a 6+2 is a 8 pin cable same thing just means you could use it on a video card with 6 pin power connector or a video card with a 8 pin
most of the time is a 6 and a 8 pin power connector on that video card

I've had another look.

The PCI-E cables are 8 pin on one end and 2 x (6+2) on the other. I've gone ahead and switched the ends so the 8-pin is plugged into the video card and the 2 x (6+2) end is on the PSU. I've tried this with just one of the 6+2's plugged in and also with both plugged in. This configuration looks neat but unfortunately it still doesn't work. I get an error message when I boot up saying something like "Please shut down and attach power to this graphics card".

Here's one of the adapters I got with the VGA:

I'm currently using the above adapter along with the following cable to power the 6-pin plug on the VGA:

Using the above two seems to work for 6-pin video cards. In fact I am currently using it to run my older ASUS card which does not require supplemental power like my new one does.

You received the wrong PCI-E cables with the PSU.

The PCI-E cables with the 8-pin PSU end are for the Seasonic X-Series model on which the V850 is based. Maybe some idiot thought they were interchangeable.

Dear Scalli,

The PCIe cables have a 6pin connector that connects to the PSU. The 8 pin connection on the PSU is for the 4+4 Pin CPU Power cable.

Can you please upload another picture of the PCIe cable you are trying to use?

Here's a clearer photo of the 8-pin side, which fits nicely into the graphics card despite being labelled PSU:

The 8-pin side fits snug on the graphics card so there's really no way I could be plugging that in wrong. On the PSU side I have tried plugging just one of the 6-pin cables in (ignoring the +2) and I've also tried plugging both 6-pins into the PSU (thereby taking up two 6-pin slots on the PSU). Neither of these configurations work and I can't see any other possible configurations with this cable.

I hope this description makes sense.

Perhaps I received the wrong cables like ko888 suggests. The photo he has linked of a different PSU shows 8-pin PCI-E slots on the PSU end, which would match up with the labelling on my cables.

It would seem that you definitely did get the wrong cables, I would contact CM about getting some replacements sent asap.

Hello Scalli,

You must have received the wrong cables. The 6+2 connection will only connect to the graphics card. You will not connect the 6+2 side of the cable to the PSU. The other end of the cable should be a 6 pin connector. If this end is an 8 pin then please contact us because you will not be able to use this cable with your graphics cards.

I've discussed this with the vendor who have had quite a few returns of the v850 due to the same problem. It would seem the wrong cables were sent out with an entire batch of the product.

They are going to replace the cables for me, I just need to get out to the store again.

This can be closed. Sorry for the confusions in my posts, it took a while for me to figure this one out. Naturally my first assumption was that I was doing something wrong!!

Ok I understand. I am in the US and we have not seen this issue here with our V-Series but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this.
