Hello,

A friend of mine has decided to replace his graphics card. He's upgrading the GTS 520 in his retail PC to a GTX 770. Moreover, he's also bought a new case and PSU. My questions are the following: His motherboard is a Micro-ATX with PCI-E 2.0 connectors, does this affect performance on a GC designed for 3.0? And are there any dangers when moving a fully equiped motherboard to a new case? And I assume a 770 Doesn't quite run on Hardly-updated 520 drivers, so Do i need to remove those before starting?

Thanks in advance

Solution
He can run his PCIe 3.0 card without any troubles on a 2.0 slot. First af all, PCIe is backwards compatible and current 3.0 cards don't even use the whole bandwidth of 2.0 slots, so he will be fine.

He will be also fine moving the fully equiped motherboard to a new case. When you build your system, you also equip the motherboard and get it in the case afterwards before you start cabling (at least, this is the way I do).

He won't have any troubles getting the card to run before removing the old drivers imho, but I would remove them first before changing the card (via Windows Uninstaller AND Driver Sweeper).

with pre built mb check that the case header cables are the same. dell and hp are known for using there on power on cables for the case switches. for the pci 2.0 mb and the newer pci 3.0 cards. the pci 3.0 cards will run in pci 2.0 slots.
the only issues with some video cards and mb are mb bios issues. make sure he puts the newest bios on his mb before he pulls it apart.
