The windows side-by-side folder (win.sxs) in my Vista laptop is taking up most of my C drive (more than 22 GB). My laptop is almost useless because of this. I'm constantly getting low memory messages. Can I move it to the D drive or should I remove the partition and just have one huge C drive? I'd consider upgrading to a newer OS, but it seems every time I do that, none of my hardware works anymore because nobody wants to be bothered supporting it in the new OS.

The WinSxS folder has to be on the same volume as Windows.

The best and safest option is to reduce it's size. See this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2795190

If that is only a temporary solution to your problem or it doesn't free up enough space, you should consider upgrading to a larger capacity hard drive.
