I'm trying to upgrade my motherboard from MSI 970A-G43 to Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. As you may already know old one has 970 NB and the new one has 990FX NB. My CPU is FX 8350. I'm running a Windows 8.1.

Will I be able to just reinstall my hardwares and boot up without a problem? My experience with upgrading motherboards have always been just reintalling hardware and just booting up fine. But since these have a different chipset, I'm worried that it my not boot up.

Thanks in advance!

I did this on a Win 8.1 machine and it would not boot up at all. I had to reinstall the OS.

On a different Win 8 machine, I replaced the motherboard on a system with the same model motherboard (different revision), still had to reinstall the OS.

You might get lucky. I would plan for the worst.

I don't mind reinstalling the OS if I have to but since I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 by upgrade assistant online, how would I re-install the OS again without a disc?
