I bought and installed new memory (2g) to push it to a total of 3g. my computer flashed the blue screen after the windoes XP l

Check that the old and new memory stick run at the same speed.
If not.

Place the slowest memory stick in the first memory slot.
And the second in the next.

Go into the bios and set the memory speed to the lowest memory speed in Mhz or DDR rating it says eg: 533 800 ect.

Make sure you have purchased the correct RAM, compatible with your system.
Check BIOS and make sure you are not overclocking anything. Set all RAM related settings to AUTO.
Power down the system and also make sure all memory is properly seated in their slots.
Power up the system and see if there is any difference

I don't mean to be a troll, but I need to say this. In the interest of everyone on the internet, please replace your PC. There are two reasons why it is not suitable for continued use:
1. It's running Windows XP. This OS is drastically insecure, making it an invitation to make it into a bot for spamming, DDoS attacks, fraud, and virus spreading. Windows XP patching support from Microsoft is very close to being discontinued. After that, any vulnerabilities will not be patched.
2. it's currently running 1GB of memory and most likely incapable of running a 2GB DIMM, as you have seen. So, it is not likely to be able to be upgraded to Windows 7, making it secure in the arena of being an insecure machine.

My advice for this particular question: give up on upgrading that system, return the memory, and save that money for getting a new machine. Heck, you can get a laptop for under $300 these days. You'd be better off with it, and so would everyone else on the internet.
