I have just built a PC with Asus Z87-PRO motherboard, i7 4770K, 32 GB DDR3 RAM, and Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard, running Windows 8.1. I am getting no sound from either the soundcard nor the onboard audio. I have tried uninstalling drivers and letting Windows reinstall as well as trying the drivers from the Asus website. I have updated my BIOS and chipset drivers. Audio is enabled in BIOS and all volume faders are adjusted accordingly.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I currently don't have the soundcard installed, as I was just trying to get the barebones system working.
Audio inputs and outputs: Acer H236HL-1 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio), Digital Audio (HDMI) (High Definition Audio Device), Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio Device), Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
Sound, video and game controllers: Bluetooth Audio Device, High Definition Audio Device, NVIDIA High Definition Audio Device

I'm at a loss too. However the fact that both onboard audio and soundcard are giving the same response seems to indicate something other than mobo, don't you think? Regardless, thanks for all your help; it is greatly appreciated.

for it to be a hardware issue, it would basically have to mean that the pci slot on the board is dead, along with the soundcard on the board, or the soundcard itself. I really believe its a driver issue as well.
My first question is, what are you using to test the sound? Youtube? Windows sounds?
