My Transcend StoreJet says on the case 500GB but only shows 120.03 GB Capacity in MAC DiskUtility. I erased partitions and all

Problems with external HD showing less capacity (120,03) than the cover states it should (500GB)

Thank you LoneWolf for your support. I took the disk to my local techie and it was found to be faulty!

Thanks for this. I was looking for how to format the drive but don't know how to do that and there's no "reformat" or "format" command in disk utility. I'm not sure how to do what you are suggesting.

I work on a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5. It has DVD/USB ports if that is what you're referring to.

Thanks for your patience!

Hmm, that's what I am afraid off Ma'am, frankly I know nothing about MAC, if you can manage a WIN PC, then I will be able to help you. Basically the external drive needs a full format to regain all of its space, I don't know as to how it can be done on MAC, but I think you can do it by :

Please keep us posted.

Thank you for this! It IS the only way to format an OSX drive. I am just wondering now if the drive was mistakenly produced with the wrong cover… Maybe it IS only a 120 GB drive? I will take it to the shop & keep you posted. Thanks much so far!

I don't think its a mistake, may be the drive is faulty. Anyways if you are stumped then contacting the retail shop is a good idea.

Or, just asking, don't you have any WIN PC available to you ?

Or, can you access the BIOS ? Chances are you will get the actual size of the drive.

Thanks much! After trying everything I brought the HD to a technician who found the disk to be faulty - only 120Gb available. :-(
