Does anyone know if i can use 2sets of 2x8gb dual memory ram on an asus sabertooth motherboard to give me 32gb of ram ?
Best avoided if possible,,,, sets of 4 are guaranteed to work ..... but I oft by 2 sets of 2 when 4x is not available .... not likely to be a problem if both bought at same time from same vendor.... but always a chance so best avoided if possible,
If running at rated speed, I have never had a problem with same brand / same model..... could be problematic for example on the Corsair Vengeance Pro line .... early sets used Hynix memory and then they switched suppliers, so mixing those might be problematic. If ya had to double those up, ya would be better off mixing the old Corsair VPs w/ current Mushkins as they use Hynix.
I have had pretty good success even mixing same spec different brand even (undertaken obviously when there was no other choice .... matching were out of production) vendor but these were always run of the mill speeds .... equivalent to today's 1600 / 1833. Would be harder I expect today at 2400 and up. Remember that the suppliers all buy the same RAM modules from a very limited source of suppliers...... the reason that so many brands perform similarly is that other then the HS style and "paint job" they are very much the same underneath.
I have really only had problems twice..... in both instances I was adding GSkills to either Corsair or Crucial equipped boxes..... they didn't get along but I was able to get them to work by taking what was in there out, and mixing Corsair and Crucial in the other boxes, then buying another set and using the 4 GSkills in the one box . One of those still in use, my office bookkeeper is using it.
