Hello,

My GA 970A UD3P board has 4 ram sockets. 4th one is covered by cooler so it wasn't used. Now listen, this gets weird.

I have 2x 4GB sockets who should be able to work together in dual-channel mode (Corsair 1600Mhz VENGEANCE rams bought in a bundle). I've put 2 modules in 1 and 3 socket, result - windows shows 8 gb and only 4 gb are being used (rest reserved for some kind of hardware.. idk) Then I put rams in 1 and 2 sockets, result - all 8 Gb are being used, problem is - this ain't a dual channel mode. Again I put rams in 2 and 3 socket, result - 4gb used only, 8gb is still displayed, but non-operating. So looks like there must be something wrong with 3rd ram socket on the motherboard, but then i put single ram module into that 3rd socket and it works... 4gb ram operating. WTF? Please help!

I've also tried putting each ram module separately into all of the sockets, everything works, but only 1 and 2 sockets can operate together with full 8gb ram efficiency, but thats not a dual-channel i would like to have.

What could be the problem?

P.S. I am using windows 7 64 bit OS and the CPU I have is AMD FX-8320

Solution

It's just a wonky connection on the DIMM socket. One of the contacts isn't... well... coming into contact. Normally this is resolved by reseating the DIMMs and/or cleaning the whole assembly.

I've just put my RAMs back into dual channel sockets 1st and 3rd and it shows 8 GB are being used. Seriously!!! WTF?! 10 mins before it PC was operating only 4 GB of RAMs in the same sockets... I mean the RAM modules are identical! PC is newly build 3 hours ago and windows are 1 hour old, fresh install and everything is default!

Going to try RAMExpert.

Here it is:

P.S. If I sucked at inserting RAMs they wouldn't be working at all...

What the hell? I just noticed RAMExpert shows I have DDR2 RAMS... But my mobo supports only DDR3

Here is the mobo I have...
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4717#sp

And there it says:
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory (Note 1)
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules (Note 2)

RAMExpert must be really fked up because if by mistake I ordered DDR2 rams instead of DDR3, I wouldn't have been able to put them in...

Maybe by accident I dripped thermal paste on the socket contacts, because I had to clean off a bit from the socket sides but not the inside. Well as long as my 8gb RAM are working I will let it slide...
Thanks for help.
