My CPU won't go back to the default clock

I was using OC Genie on my MSI Z77A-GD65 for a couple months, maybe three months. Once I got a graphics card, I wanted to turn it back down, now that I don't have to use integrated. I turned it off today, to try to save the wear and tear on my processor. When I pressed the button to turn it off, it won't go back down to the factory clock. I checked the Windows Task Manager, then CPU-Z. They both showed it was still at the overclock speed. I have restarted my computer to allow it to take effect, but no change. Any help? It's locked running at 4.17GHz constantly, instead of dynamically changing up and and down based on demand as it normally would, and it's worrying me a bit. I want this built to last a while.
