This only happens when I play a game and it doesn't happen all the time. When I first built this computer it had a GTX 660 Superclocked in it, when ever I launched Battlefield 4 (Buggy game I know) it would freeze up the entire system with no BSoD or any error messages and the only way to get back on the computer was to do a hard reset. Thinking it was the GPU I RMAd it and got another one, same problem. I eventually got a refund on the card and went back to my Radeon 6850 everything was running fine until it happened again today while I was exploring Space Engine (Phenomenal by the way, you guys should check it out.) entire system freeze mouse stopped working, skype went quite, no ctrl-alt-del. Nothing. I've checked the event logs and all there is is the typical Kernel-Power error where it says "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." Here are the details in XML view, nothing really interesting.

Specs

  • Mobo: 990FXA-UD5
CPU: AMD FX 8350 Stock 4.0Ghz
RAM: 4 sticks of 2gb Ripjaw series
    PSU: Corsair TX650
GPU: Radeon HD 6850 taken from old build, I plan on upgrading to the 770 this week
    OS: Windows 8.1 pro 64bit

Things I've tried:

    New GPU
    Memtest = all good
CPU test for an hour = good
GPU test for an hour = good
    Reformatting windows
    sfc /scannow = good
    Clean installing drivers countless times
Checking temps CPU= 10 idle (Hello Polar Vortex!) GPU= 30-40 idle

The only thing I can think of now is the PSU. I would like someone to back me up on this as well before I go and spend the money on another PSU. Hopefully we can fix this and if we can, thank you in advance!

I am pretty sure that will resolve your problem.

They were also from the old build, my smaller one (320gb) is almost 6-8 years old and runs the OS and drivers. You think that could be it?

I do have the latest BIOS, I am going to try what Gate9er said before I mess around with the voltages. Will report back.

Alright I installed Windows 8.1 on my other hard drive will see how it works out, seeing how the freezing seems to be random it may take awhile.

Alright, Hello again! Thought you would like an update on what's going on. I installed windows 8.1 on my 2TB drive last night and everything was going smoothly, played some War Thunder and some RUST. The I installed Space Engine again. Everything was going smoothly I even played a lot longer then I did yesterday but it froze again. Ctrl-alt-del wouldn't work all fan lights were on my num lock key was on and couldn't be turned off and the only way to get back was to do a hard reset. I decided to try what Tradesman1 said as well so far there has been no crash, but like I said it only happens in games usually at random times. If there is anything else I could try I would love to know because I am getting a bit confused on why this is happening. I would like to add that I don't think it's the motherboard seeing how it only crashes during games, and from the looks of it all the capacitors are a-okay.

The thing with such problems is that you never know what to expect. Even the shiniest hardware can be dead never trust your eyes when it comes to pc hardware. Please specify one more time your pc hardware and for how long you have had each one of them. Hopefully we can figure something out..

Knew I was forgetting something! No I am not using the superclocked anymore! I RMAd it 2 weeks ago because I thought that was the source of the problem and I yet to get another from Newegg. Currently I am using the Radeon 6850 which is about 2 1/2 years old. And yes I have a genuine copy of windows bought it right off the store and stuck it on a USB.

So to get things clear. First it is not a software issue since you formatted the drive. Then, your gpu should not be the problem since you have changed two cards but the problem occurs. Memtest showed no problems so RAM must be fine. I also presume that both hard drives are fine since the problem occurred with the OS installed on both. The last three options are the CPU, motherboard and PSU. I am starting to think that this is a PSU problem. Do you have a spare PSU or can you borrow one from a friend of yours?

I've had AMD for almost 6 years now and haven't ran into this problem before, but I did what you said to do before I got off last night, no crashes as of yet but I haven't played any games today.

Well once I get this problem sorted out I was planning on upping my GPU to the GTX 770 4GB Classified which has a minimum of 600 watts.

Are you using a single monitor setup?

So I got my new power supply today installed it and everything was working fine. Then it froze again! Could it be the RAM even though it showed it was fine in the mem test?
