Yes. You should be able to run a single AMD card in a 680i chipset. You will not be able to CrossFire as the board doesn't support that.

barto's right. The board does not support crossfire so only one AMD GPU will work. But the board does support SLI for two Nvidia GPU's.

Well I can't provide exact numbers but a quad core would be better suited to support the 6870 fully.
