I am trying to build my first gaming computer and have most of the parts decided. However, I am having trouble figuring out which power supply to buy. I have looked at a couple of different ones such as the Corsair Professional 750W 80+ Semi-Modular, the Cooler Master V series, XFX, and Seasonic. I have heard that seasonic and xfx are the best but there are so many choices that I have no idea which one to choose. I am simply looking for advice from people who have had more experience with power supplies and can give me some suggestions. Thanks.

Other parts:

CPU: i7-4770k

CPU cooler: Cooler Master 212 EVO

Motherboard: ASRock z87 Extreme4

RAM: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600Mhz

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB WIndforce

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 mid Tower

The estimated wattage of the system was 405W and I am interested in the ability to overclock so ideally I would like a 750W PSU or higher.

First of all, you won't need 750W to run that system. For the power supply, I generally recommend Seasonic and XFX as the best brands. Look at a PSU with a high certifcation and modular cabling. It's a bit more expensive but well worth the money !

If you are on a budget, take a look at XFX XTR Series or Seasonic G Series. If you are willing to put a little more in your power supply, go check the Seasonic X Series.

Well you will not need 750watts unless you plan to add another GPU for SLI. Corsair HX or AX series along with the XFX or Seasonic and you really can not go wrong I personally would get the cheapest of them.

The power supply is extremely important and too many people haven't done their homework! You are right in wanting a 750 watt supply. A 750 supply will run cooler and use less power from the wall producing the same 450 watts than an equal quality 500 watt unit. I spent several days reading dozens of articles on power supplies and was most impressed ( at that time, almost a year ago ) with Corsair's AX750. It simply had next to no ripple on all rails and the cooling fan doesn't even come on until the unit exceeds 350 watts. It runs significantly cooler than my old Thermaltake 600 supply that I bought 7 years ago for $169. I look at a PS purchase differently than a CPU or GPU simply because the PS purchase will last though many CPU,MB and GPU upgrades. I expect ( or hope ) to get at least 7 years out of each PS! If funds aren't too much of an issue, buy a great PS and you won't have to worry about it for a long time! Do your homework and read all the reviews of the Corsair, Seasonic and XFX supplies to see which is the best for you right now! You will probably see that reviewers will tend to have a consensus about any particular model if there is a real winner or any hidden lemons.
