The improvement in performance per-core, per-clock rate isn't huge by any means, and you'd need a new MOBO to boot. The 2600 is still a fantastic CPU for modern uses.

No that would be a downgrade in everything apart from gaming.

I wouldnt suggest you go to a 4th gen I5 you are basically going to downgrade. Not everything new is always better.
