Ok, so, what im trying to do is get better signal in my pool house. My kid plays games online and as he got older, He decided he wanted to live in the pool house. His gaming system only gets a 45 percent signal out there. Getting signal in the pool house but not enough. What would be the best way to extend the signal without breaking the bank? Aftermarket antenna, range extender, whats my best bet? The game system is prob 120 feet from the router which is inside the office in the regular house. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Im a noob and have no idea whats goin on lol thank alot

Solution
The above is correct.

Your options are:

1) Better Wi-Fi adapter for his PC.

2) Better ROUTER.

3) #1 and #2

4) Wi-Fi Extender (preferably about HALF-WAY)

5) ETHERNET CABLE

6) ROUTER antennae (if your Router has a connection).

The answer is difficult without knowing what ROUTER you have. An Ethernet cable solves your issue completely but may not be an option for you.

A good Gigabit Router can probably boost the signal by at least 2x compared to a non-Gigabit version, however a good Wi-Fi adapter on his end will also make a difference to either Router.

BUDGET is going to really dictate as well and "breaking the bank.." doesn't help me that much.

**If he gets a 45% signal is it still working fine or dropping off? If it's...

I'm not great with networking either, my expertise is in other areas, but here's my two cents: The best way to ever get a signal is through a direct, wired connection. If you manage to find a 130 foot ethernet cable and can hide it properly so things still look aesthetically pleasant, I'd recommend that. They're cheap, about $30 - $40 USD for a 250 ft ethernet cable, but the only problem is that I know from other subjects that over 50 feet or so the quality of any signal, whether it's a video, audio, or networking cable, tends to lose its signal. That being said, even taking into consideration the drop off at 120 feet, a cheaper ethernet cable would still probably provide a more adequate connection than any wireless range extender. Someone else will have to provide more details than I can, though.

**If he gets a 45% signal is it still working fine or dropping off? If it's WORKING with no drops then there should be no reason to do anything. If it's intermittent then it's on the verge of being stable so little need be done. In this case my recommendation becomes:

a) better wi-fi adapter for PC, or

b) MOVE the Router if possible so it's closer, or

c) Router antennae, or

d) Change the ROUTER signal strength in its setup (see manual for PC access) to max signal output, or

e) a MIXTURE of the above
