Solution
Your situation could be caused by a number of things. I would first open open Network Connections, disable the network adapter, and re-enable it. If that does not change anything, open a CMD prompt and try to run "ipconfig /renew". If that does not work, you may have a bigger problem.

From the laptops perspective, it might be hard-coded for a static IP if he requires one at home. From the routers perspective, you may have a MAC Address White-list which is preventing non-specific PCs from connecting to the network.

I'm going to assume that you got the error regarding a valid IP while running ipconfig /renew

If it's been connected to your network before with no issues in the past and nothing has changed, that would point to a break, not a configuration problem (so you can skip over checking for static IPs or a whitelist).

Have you tried rebooting the router?
Has there been any changes you've made to your own PC thats related to networking at all (like any kind of VLAN software or region spoofing)
