I have the Zotac GTX660 Synergy edition with one inbuilt fan.

Is it advisable to remove the black shield and add extra fans on either sides of the heat sink? Will this aid cooling or will this actually reduce the efficiency by blocking the airflow from the fan mounted on the side of the case?

Solution
If you are using the setup in your link, you have plenty of cooling. If you feel you need more, put a 120mm high volume, low rpm fan on the side cover over the gpu.

There are aftermarket cooling solutions available, but unless you are having severe heat issues I wouldn't bother with them. Make sure you keep the dust bunnies out of the gpu, and if you feel you need additional cooling, a side mounted case fan blowing directly onto the gpu should give you any additional help needed.

I am not having any heat issues, I just happen to have 2 extra fans lying around. Was trying to get the forum's opinion on whether they could be of any use. The side fan blows parallel to the heat sink, not directly onto it, like the inbuilt fan does. I was hoping I could remove the black casing and add the fans on either sides of the main fan.

Since you are not having heat issues, there is really no need for the additional fans. The gpu fan is going to do the brunt of the work. An additional fan on the case side as an intake would just supply cooler outside air to the gpu fan, thus making it a little more effective.

Bottom line - the choice is yours. Just remember to keep positive pressure in your case (more intake than exhaust) and if you decide to mount a side fan, make sure it is in intake mode.

I live in a place where room temperature = 36°C, hence the obsession with adding more intake fans.

This is the cooling config I am using : Best cooling setup for my rig
