I have an 865PE Neo2-V with a 3.2ghz intel processor which I would like to use for HD video. At the moment it struggles, and upgrading the graphics card made no difference. The specification says "3.2ghz or faster"?! Will it support a dual core?

That's a pretty old one. I think upgrading the CPU either won't help you. Upgrade the mobo also.

I realise that it's old, but couldn't we watch HD in those days? It only needs to be a little bit faster to work correctly. Buying a new motherboard would also require new memory and a new graphics card; basically a whole new computer.

Thanks for that. I was considering buying a socket 478 dual core processor, but if you say it won't work, I won't waste my money. Would overclocking make enough of a difference?

No, that is a really old CPU, so the performance difference will be negligible, even with extreme overclocking.
The max CPU upgrade would be :
Pentium4 3.4E HT (3.4ghz/1MB/800mhz) Pres-cott

If you are comfortable doing so give overclocking a try, if all you are doing is HD video playback you should be able to manage that. You do have hyperthreading active correct? I have not tried HD playback on the P4 however my 1.8ghz dual core s939 Opteron 165 @ stock settings I still use to this day in my media center server after retiring it from gaming duty.

At this point only positives can come from overclocking because it could make your computer fast enough to do what you want... and if it dies in the process you would have needed to upgrade it anyway.
