monitor is completely black

when I set up my emachine and turn it on it starts to bring up the windows xp display but instantly fades to complete black. I had it on once to look at pics on monitor but pixels started squiggling and then completely went black. So I shut it down and now it wont even bring up the start up screen at all. HELP

The only way to go with this problem is first try a different monitor to establish just where the problem lies, so try to beg or borrow one just for testing purposes.

If a borrowed monitor works fine, there's your answer. You monitor is faulty.

If,however, a different monitor makes no difference, the computer's graphics hardware may be faulty, but first try a different VGA cable just to be sure it isn't that.

If new VGA cable makes no difference, you'll need to think about buying a new graphics card as that's about the only other thing it can be that springs to mind.
