I recently built a new desktop-
FX-8320 CPU
R9 270X GPU
8 Gb of RAM (8x1)
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Motherboard
1TB WD Velociraptor HDD
80 GB Intel 320 SSD
Corsair 430w power supply
... and I blue screen immediately on the start-up of a game. My HDD light also seems to stutter a lot and when it does I hear a rattling noise.

Ok here is probably your problem.
Your HDD has failed and you need to replace it. With high rpm hdds, there can be higher chances of component error or failure. Now 2 things.
1. Define rattling. HDDs make noise but if it sounds like something is bouncing around then that's a problem.
2. Does the blue screen happen at system startup? Or can you load the OS and do other things such as watch videos?
3. You say it happens when you try and play a game. Is it any game or a particular game?
4. Have you checked your drivers?

*sigh*

What's the BSOD STOP Code [0x00000xxx]/Error Message? can't really debug until we know that much...

Go to the website for your graphics card vendor and install the latest drivers for your video card. post the results
thanks

We need much more info before we can help with anything. I had the exact same problem, but it turns out that my paged pool was low because I had only 2GB of RAM in a W7 64bit system. Post the stop error code from the BSOD.

You have a lot of possible reasons:

First of all. and this is CRUCIAL. Dont run anymore games till this is solved. You might destroy your PC if you keep testing it that way.

Now, lets rule out possible problems:

1. Get memtest and run in. Figure out if your ram module is working correctly.

2. Update drivers (just in case).

3. Your PSU cant handle your PC . As soon as you try to launch the game, your GPU calls for power from the PSU, and its cant deliver. Your Windows BSODs to avoid damage to componenets (but you will manage to damage them if you persist doing this).

To confirm if its the third problem, you need to get a more powerfull PSU (there is no way around that, unless they can test it in a shop or something).

4. Its the hard drive. If you even suspect it can be the HDD, get another one right now (i suggest any samsung spinpoint with a higher cache than 8mb, as i found them to be the best in the market), and make a backup of everything you really care about.

Ok i know what is wrong with your computer, a lot of other people have the same problem.
Your gpu/cpu fan has failed. As a result, the integrated graphics of the cpu is able to handle the extremely hot (therefore not highly usable) load of the gpu. That is the rattling noise, and when you try and do high graphic-intensive things, it causes your computer to crash. I am fairly sure this is the issue, as I have seen many other problems similar to this.

if you post your memory dump on a public cloud share, I will connect a windows debugger and see why the OS called the bugcheck.
