I am an avid gamer and I am starting to notice my current rig is.. somewhat outdated.
I have looked into building my own PC as its cheaper and the hands on experience is appealing to me. So currently i have already purchased:

A case and 450W PSU bundle.
    ASROCK H61M-VS3 micro ATX motherboard
and all other odd items and peripherals such as extra fans.

My current GPU ( nVidia GeForce GT240 ) as well as my CPU ( Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, 1866 MHz) are extremely outdated but have surprisingly handled games such as Skyrim on Medium and Dead Island Riptide on low.

I currently have 6Gb of DDR2 RAM looking at 4Gb of DDR3 RAM as well.

I have more or less made my mind up about getting an intel i3 3220. But will look into anything else including AMD if it is cheaper and better value for my money :D

Also what GPU would be recommended?

I would prefer one with a VGA connection as well as HDMI if possible! But if you have a better idea please suggest as I will be getting a newer monitor in the near future.

I do not have an exact budget for you. But anything considered 'cheap' or 'good value for money' I will definitely look into!

Since you already bought the H61 Mobo, AMD Option is not there.
The best bet is to buy i3 3220 with Radeon HD7790, if you want a VFM system.
