I bought an r9 290 and I put an accelero extreme 3 aftermarket cooler on it and I am kind of considering selling it and buying like a 280x or gtx 770. I only game on a 1680x1050 single monitor and I know the 290 is way overkill for my system. But I also like to know that I can play games maxed out and still get above 60 fps. I am in the 290 almost $500 and I I can get a MSI gaming edition 280x for $339 giving me $160 dollars back I could spend on something else. I could always go crossfire in the future if the 280x does meet my expectations. What should I do?

With that monitor a 270.270x is all you need to play games at max settings. You would also have about $150 dollars more to upgrading your cpu/mobo/psu over buying a 770.

I wouldn't bother. You won't get full market value for the R9-290 as a used item and you'll end up paying the money you got for an inferior graphics card. Sure you may not game at a high enough level to completely use it yet but you will soon. Look at me, I game with one monitor at 1080p and run two HD 7970s. I know it's overkill but I also know that I'm going to be set for years. Keep the R9-290.

Actually, at that resolution (assuming you plan to stay with it for a while) you could consider a 270/270x. Then the profit of selling may be woth it... otherwise consider saving and get a better monitor and enjoy the 290.

As long as you have a fast CPU and fast RAM , 2GB VRAM should be enough
If you prefer Battlefield 4 , get R9 280X

I do love having over 90 fps on bf4 though. I probably wont upgrade my monitor for awhile. If i could sell the card for anywhere around 470 to 500 with that aftermarket cooling on it I may do it. Most reference 290s are over 500 dollars right now by thremselves. Ive only gamed on the card maybe 15 hours. If i did sell the card and buy the 770 ib probably buy the gigabyte version that is 329.99 right now and I could buy me a good modular psu or a motherboard that will oc better than the one i have.

my main game is battlefield 4 and the 270x is benchmarked at like 41 fps and that is too low for me it looks too choppy. and how long would that card last before needing to be upgraded?

I would sell your graphics card on Ebay IF you can get a good price. If you send it back to Newegg or where ever you will get a RE-Stocking Fee, yeah really stupid and they will charge I think $100 (not sure, but I remember that they took a lot of money from me)

Once you sell your graphics card I would wait for high resolution displays (1440p) with G-Sync and the Oculus Rift

I just put the card on ebay. I am going to do some research on what card I will end up getting. I am iffy on getting the 270 but it does seem like an option and I could get some better components and maybe a better monitor and save up some money and get a better card after I have the kind of display that demands it.

if not GTX 770 or R9 280X , then either GTX 760 or R9 270

so you want to max out bf4 with 4 msaa? or you don't care for AA ? and i don't know why you bought 290 for gaming on low resolution , anyway you can probably save cash by doing that , you can get 770 and it will be far enough as for future proof for gaming that require more than 2gbvram there isn't feature broof but anyway you stuck with 2gb either way because of the bus speed of which 770 are limited to it in more way it will carry less data between the gpu and memory , but 770 should be good but if you are going for 1080p keep your 290X

R9 270X is just factory overclocked R9 270-the same number of shaders, texture units,compute units. R9 270X is only 5% faster than R9 270.

I bought it just trying to get the best stuff possible I wasnt really thinking about anything rationally. I bought it before researching stuff or anything just jumped into it too fast. I wont be able to upgrade the monitor for awhile so with the 270x I could get about 200-250 dollars back and use it to buy other parts since the 290 is not being used to its potential anyways. Then just upgrade later down the line when i need to and hopefully mantle will boost the 270x fps a little as well. If i kept the 290 I would have to get a bigger psu because i just got an evga 600b and I am overclocking the cpu as much as I can so there isnt much headroom left and id say Im at the upper limits of that psu.

your psu has enough power even for GTX 770.
