Black screen with cursor after login

Hello,

All of the sudden my pc won't advance past the windows 8 login screen. I can enter my password, but then I get stuck at a black screen w/ a cursor. It doesn't freeze though, I can still ctrl-alt-delete and access task manager and stuff.

Last weekend I upgraded my motherboard, cpu, video card and ram. I didn't have to reinstall windows (kept the same hard drive), though after the hardware upgrade, it kept telling me to activate windows, though it would no longer accept my windows 8 installation key. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem.

I scanned in safe mode in command prompt. It found errors it couldn't fix in cbs.log. The last thing I had done before this started happening was hook my pc up to my tv via HDMI. Next time I restarted it, I couldn't advance past login.

I would greatly appreciate any tips to fix this.

If you can get back to safe mode with command prompt run a CHKDSK.

chkdsk /r c:

This is assuming your OS is installed to C:
It will ask you to schedule for next restart, enter Y then rastart. Sometimes takes over an hour to complete.

most likely you have graphics drivers mixed from different builds.
you will want to boot into safe mode, uninstall your graphics drivers.
reboot let microsoft update your graphics drivers via windows update and you want to reboot when it is done. after this reboot you can update the graphics driver from the vendor site and it should work ok

don't forget the reboot after microsoft does its update, they don't actually install the driver until the next time the system boots.

edit: read that you connected to hdmi tv, your video may be now configured to come out another port on your video now. Thanks to plug and play. you might plug back into the hdmi and see if you see the video, then change the graphics driver defaults shut down and unplug the HDMI tv.
plug in your monitor and power on.


you need to boot into safe mode with the vga only low resolution. If you can not see the options
because of a blank screen, power cycle the machine, and boot to the blank screen, I think i read if you did this three times in a row windows assumes something is wrong with the graphics drivers and boots with the old VGA.sys driver in safe mode. IF it still does not work, then I would check your power supply lead that runs from the graphics card directly to the power supply. make sure you got a good connection or try another led if you have that option on your power supply, reboot and see if the problem is still there.

I tried running safe mode low res w/ my pc connected to my monitor and tv via hdmi, still nothing. I did check the connections also, everything seems to be fine. It's strange, everything was working perfectly right after I set it up.

After restoring my pc to the pre-patch state, i was able to install these succesfully by taking the following steps:
1. Reboot into safe mode with command prompt
2. Delete fntcache.dat from c:\windows\system32
3. Reboot back to windows 8.1. The fntcache.dat file is auto-recreated.
4. Install the two famous updates and pray
I believe the theory expressed above about some older font cache format may be correct, and probably microsoft didnt test compatibility with it... So only when you have a 'freshly created' fontcache right before the patch it works correctly...
