Hi everybody

I have an old DVD burner from a branded HP desktop system. I am using this DVD Writer in another desktop PC.

a couple of days ago i got a weird problem on this dvd all of sudden. On win7x64 startup, DVD drive doesn't initialize as normally it should. its mechanism keeps moving, lens sliding continuously for 10 to 15 minutes after windows boots up. when the drive is silent, it disappears from windows explorer and from device manager. This is without a media inserted in it.

when a media is inserted, it repeats similar things. sometime it does recognize a pre-recorded CD-ROM but for some time only. during operation, after a while drive is again lost from explorer as mentioned above.

I am suspecting a firmware corrupt!. just want to flash it but I can not find it on all HP support website since this drive is an accessory in a hp desktop system and not a retail hp product.

i got following details for the DVD drive:

MODEL: as detected in windows7x64 device manager

IDE\CDROMTSSTCORP_CDDVDW_TS-H653Q________________0303____\5&295AF142&0&5.0.0

Firmware : 0303 ( mentioned on the drive label )

after hours of search on I could not find anything of this firmware or higher for this drive.

Samsung international website shows no firmware available under H653Q

http://tsstodd.com/eng/firmware/fwdo...p=624&tabIdx=1

but on samsung korean website i got a firmware for the same drive but with different firmware version class i-e 'SC01'

here is the link

http://www.tsstodd.com/kor/firmware/...ue=view&no=666

My Question is:

1- Can i try this fimrware 'SC01' in place of the original firmware '0303'

2- if not, how and where can i get the firmware 0303 or higher for my drive

3- in general, if there is a newer firmware update available for a DVD writer, should we upgrade it soon, or it is not of much importance if dvd writer is working fine with current media sets and current burning tasks!

waiting for reply

If it was working normally before, but suddenly started giving you problems, then I doubt there is a problem with the firmware. Check your signal and power cables, make sure they are on there tight. If the problem persists, I'd just junk the drive. You can buy new DVD burners for really cheap. If you want to try that other firmware version, go ahead, but understand that it may not work and may make the drive completely unusable. But if that happens, again, just get a new one.

I already managed another drive as the main burner.

But just wanted to experiment on the defective one. It was a good burner with many success works for me and went down all of a sudden. I use my desktop hardware extensively (physically) experimenting many things. so mostly I keep left lid of my case open!

Recently experimenting i remember slightly that i just disconnected power cable of this DVD drive and left sata cable attached during a few reboots, that may have corrupt the system. but i am not sure about the reason of drive going faulty. it may be other things.

Even if this drive in question becomes ok. I am not going to rely on it for burning.

Before trying that firmware ver SC01, I want to possibly get a firmware in same ver (like 0303 or above since that is the reported class)

or at a minimum, how can I copy the current firmware in Drive as a backup on my PC just in case ...i can go back ?
