Do I have to have the destination drive at moment I clone the source?

I just purchased a new desktop for our office, and have purchased an SSD to go with it. I want the SSD to be the boot drive, so I need to clone the existing drive over to the SSD. The SSD hasn't arrived yet, but I have the desktop. Can I start the cloning process and store the cloned file somewhere in the meantime until it gets in, or do I have to have both drives installed on the same computer to get the job done?

For the drivers, go to Dell.com and download all the relevant drivers. Save them on a USB stick or CD.
After the Windows install...install the drivers as needed.

You can create an 'image' and save it elsewhere. When you get the new drive, port that image to it.
Of course, this assumes everything else is in order. Source and target sizes, for instance.

But I always recommend a clean install on a new SSD.

Thanks for the reply. The only thing that worries me about a clean install on a dell machine is making sure I get all the drivers installed properly and anything else that might be missing on just a clean install. Is this process pretty fool-proof?
