Hello everyone,

Just bought a TP-Link, TD-W8970. When MAC filtering is enabled it allows the other 5 whitelisted devices - Android devices and a Repeater - to connect through WiFi, and they get Internet access. But it doesn't allow my Windows 7, Home Premium, 64-bit laptop to connect. This is the laptop from which I configured the ADSL modem and router settings for the TP-Link. Having read something similar on another thread, I renamed my laptop, but the problem persisted. The MAC address enabled in the whitelist is the one for the wireless adapter of the Windows 7 laptop, not the one for the Ethernet adapter. However, even with the MAC filtering enabled when I am in range of my D-Link 505 in Repeater mode, the Laptop can access the Wi-Fi and get Internet access. What's happening? What can I do to rectify the problem? Thanks.

Regards,

S K Ditta.

It ate my first attempt at a response so I will post the short version.

It is likely because of how repeaters work. They use the repeaters mac address in many cases to make the connection to the main router. Hard to say since it is normally done via WDS and that is not a standard so there is variation between manufactures.

You should never use mac security anyway since many times you can just key in the mac address you want to use in the driver...or you edit the registry. You should always use WPA/WPA2 with good passwords that you change if you think someone has obtain them.

Thanks bill001g for responding promptly. Your practical advice is well taken about setting good passwords and changing them from time to time. Though I don't presently understand the reason for failure to connect to WiFi from the router (maybe TP-Link needs to release a firmware upgrade), I am happy to just get the work done!
