This may be an odd question, but can I install Vista on an older server that currently has no OS? I have an free 1u server that has 2gb RAM and it is collecting dust. As far as performance goes, are servers going to be slow for simple web browsing or what should I expect. This is just a project I want to do since I have the Vista disk from a dead machine with activation code, and the server was free. Thanks for any assistance.

Its not windows per say but the look and feel like windows and for basic computing and such would work well....Theres also wine for Linux where you can install some windows apps but I have never played with it yet .. I have ran Ubuntu and zorin off and on for surfing the net emails movies and other apps it runs well and its free ... Just wish windows wasn't 100 plus bucks per install per system would make life easier when building pc,s for friends and family when there worried about costs and not quality...

Darn, it is OEM. I thought about Ubuntu, but I am very familiar with Windows and was hoping for that. I would like install an open source NVR application on the new machine such as iSpy. I imagine iSpy has a linux version, but my linux knowledge is minimal.

That mainly depends on the driver availability in the first place! Vista compatible drivers are not very common for server hardware. You may get in trouble before the installation even starts, because of a missing F6 driver for the scsi controller. LAN port might be the next stop.

This is a learning opportunity!
Free server, free OS...go for it.

LinuxMint is also a very Windowy feeling distro.

@johnnyb105 I did not know Linux had a Windows-esque flavor out there. noidea_77 I never thought about driver issues, so my project might be a lost cause. I guess I will find out in due time.
