I put together a PC today and when I
plug it in and turn on the power supply, an LED in the MOBO comes on but nothing else happens. The first time I turned it on the optical drive worked well enough to open and close for my MOBO CD. I think it's down to the RAM or ESD. The RAM I got came in a plastic bag and I don't know if it was new or used. I also made some serious f*ck ups with ESD, I didn't wear a wristband, used a cluttered workspace and touched all the wrong bits of the motherboard. In other news, I am an idiot.
My specs are:
CPU: AMD a10 5800k APU
MOBO: BIOSTAR 85W
RAM: 1 stick of mushkin essentials DDR3 240 pin. 4GB.
Hard disk: WD Caviar Green 1TB. I know this works.
Optical Drive of some description. This also works.
PSU: Corsair CX500W

OK, I think I found it.
Try starting the board out of the case (for ruling out a short), only CPU and CPU fan installed, both 24 and 8 pin power cables connected. Start it by shortly touching with a screwdriver the 2 pins on the motherboard where the front panel button gets connected (it's what the button does when pressed - jumping the 2 pins).
See if the CPU fan does spin.

AHA! There isa tiny ower button on the MOBO whic needed to be pressed. With he RAm connected, a few seconds after it bootsI get one high pitched beep and eventually a display of either what sees to be A6 or Ab or A9 for POST code. What doe this mean?
