"I just found the cause. The "Stationery pad" option is checked on the files, which turns the original file into a template. This is useful for files that you use as a template, and always want to edit a copy, but not for the files we have on the server.

- Right-click and select "Get Info"
- Open the General section
- uncheck Stationary pad

Files should now open normally without creating a copy first."

Hope that helps.

You could try "killing" your finder preferences and rebooting. I'm not saying this will help but may be worth a shot. The commands for doing so are:

cd ~/Library/Preferences
rm -rf com.apple.finder.plist com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

After doing so you will need to reboot the computer.

I know the thread in the link above is about a different problem and may or may not help but finding a solution, as you know, is not easy.

Thanks for your help but it did not work. Should I delete Safari completely and start again.?

I'm not sure, still looking for a solution. Trying different phrases in a Google and Bing search since I have not encountered the problem and that is proving to be frustrating as well since most of the results come up how to find and remove duplicate files and folders. I have posted the question in the Apple Support Forums and will let you know what I find out. What kind of mac are you using and what version of OSX are you using. I will update the question with that info.
