Tor and Wine in GNOME fail after U10.04 --> 12.04 upgrade

Gents:

I have become comfortable with GNOME-3 Classic in my U12.04 Intel workstation so I pulled-the-trigger on my legacy box.

Using the UPGRADE function in Ubuntu Update.manager I moved my legacy AMD.965/MSI.7900-gd70/BFG9800gtx+ system from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04.3 both LTS. OS transfer and config took about 3 hours ... uneventful except for various threats and one wordless pop-up box of mini-squares yep! ... and afterward dammm-near everything came-over working ... so says prelim tests and even the Epson scanner and HP-laserjet work.

Google-Earth failed, but reinstall is trivial. Unity is of-course an unspeakable snot-nosed potty-mouth cartoon. GNOME installed without issue once I found the )&*T!@V!*B~ terminal.

Tor refuses to load claiming that a non-existant browser PROXY is a bother. Vidalia-icon is XXed-out. Makes no sense as I never use proxy! Interesting, FireFox has its Proxy slots blank-as-always, but CHROME proxy slot is "grayed-out" so no choice is possible whatever that means.

WINE/apps appear hosed including precious freebee Photoshop & TopSpice programs. The apps are there all right, but chosing one gets a "loading" text-message then nothing. Won't run. I can play with it more; but, it looks like WINE-in-12.04 can't deal with apps it sucked-in for U10.04.

Any ideas for foxing the TOR and WINE issues will be appreciated. Thanks to Ms AMDgurl for advising patience.

Try installing playonlinux and winetricks and see if they can't show you what you are missing.

Finding anything in Unity only requires you open the search icon top left and start typing, I got Terminal as first choice after I typed only te. I could have hit enter and been in.

Chrome uses the system proxy settings, once set there it's set in chrome as well.

I will DLoad "winetricks" ...

Setting proxy ..... sorry to be clueless I do NOT have the concept! I don't know what is a "systems proxy" or perhaps all proxies ARE system proxy. I see the boxes & words of-course ... In-the-day I used a proxy-setting with Proxomitron in WinME, but I understood that PROXO-setting pointed at the browser .... what it means to set-a-proxy for the system does not call up for me any specific action or implications.

I DLoaded 'playonlinux' ... and run CLI it fails with the error:

p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

WINETRICKS was already installed. When -run- it reconfigured some stuff: TOPSPICE runs, but does not print properly. Adobe hardlocks its desktop. I'll try to KILL-9 it from here ... later.

Adobe PHOTOSHOP works ... ADOBE Illustrator trashes the window. TOPSPICE produces complete plots that can be exported as *.bmp files and printed successfully. But, printing from within SPICE produces images with various missing parts.

Should you ever need to set your proxy click on your user name top right, select system settings and the on the network icon and there you set it.

Tor. I just installed it on mine and no problems. Perhaps you need to sudo killall tor and restart it.

I have un-installed TOR using Synaptic .. but ofcourse I could not ever really tell you what I had installed -- some unknown mix of TOR and VIDALIA. Question now is whether I should just re-install from Ubuntu repo or use the TOR BUNDLE the TOR site advises. I do not know the implications of installing the TOR BUNDLE or what advantage I gain. Does it interfere with TOR_less surfing or other browsers should you choose? Which CIA division produces the code?

Also, what does VIDALIA have to do with TOR? Is it a front end/back-end/side-end ... GUI/CLI WTF ....? Is it like PGP ... a byteboi tool only infinitly more trouble than it's worth?

**BTW** When I click-my-name (upper right) I have no listed choice for "system settings". I blundered into a way of using TOR: from CLI

chromium-browser --proxy-server=socks://localhost:9050

This is from:http://goshawknest.wordpress.com/2012/04/03/how-to-easi...

For me this is feckin-A ragged-edge of computer skills with zero understanding yet vdesirable outcome when it works whatever it is/does ... Don't ask don't tell.

Uninstalled TOR, Vidalia & Chrome. Obvious all got hosed by the upgrade. Re-installed TOR+pals+Chrome from Synaptic. Works! Chrome surfs-away from a South Pacific atoll ... no solution yet (but, export) for printing errors in TOPSPICE.

Good. Not that you need it now but in the search type system and the choice of system settings will come up tops.

When I type the word 'systems' in SEARCH-box I get a bunch of WIKI URL entries ... not a choice of (my) systems settings. We seem to be cross-talking .....XXXXX
