I'm very new to this kind of stuff. I have just built my first custom computer, and I want to know if I can just get Linux on a disk and boot it up or do I have to get Windows first?

yes you can boot from a linux disk without having windows installed.if you are more familiar with windows os i would recommend linux zorin as its a lot like win7.mint is another good option.booting it from the disk is not quite as fast as when its actually installed.

You can download Linux, burn it on a DVD-R, then boot from that DVD-R and install. There are versions that will just run from the DVD-R too. You don't need Windows. You just need a DVD-R or temporary access to another computer that will download it and burn the disk.

Linux, in all its various forms, is its own operating system. Windows is not needed in the least.

Mind you....there are major differences between Windows and Linux. Depending on what you want to do with this new PC, it may not be for you.

But do try it out. Free, and you can always buy a Windows license and install that later.
