I need an external power supply to power my gtx 780 ti, in my alienware x51. I bought a full modular power supply so there was no clutter since this will be outside my case, and vissually unapealling hould there be a bunch of dangling wires. I heard when you use a power supply just for your gpu, you need to take a paper clip, or actually cut and wire together, the green and ground cables, on the 24 pin atx cable...since my power supply is fully modular, do i STILL HAVE to do that, would i just put my modular 24 pin cable into it then do that trick, or can i just leave the cable out, and no harm done?

Solution
The fact that your PSU is modular means nothing. You do still have to do that accursed Frankenstein job because the "external" PSU still needs the signal from the motherboard to turn on. Otherwise, you'll turn your computer on and the "external" PSU will remain inactive.

thanks, just wasnt sure of what that "trick" specifically did. Now that I know, i just saved myself from frying a psu on its way, lol...so how exactly does it work...when my computer is turned off do i also have to turn off the power switch on the external psu, do i have to flip that on and off whenever i turn my pc on and off to?
