I'm looking to use this for gaming on a 1080p monitor. I would prefer not to go higher but if there is a card that is noticeably better at say £170-80 then please include it
Thanks!

The 7870XT is a slightly cut down 7950 and runs very close in terms of performance, putting it just above the R9270X.
With only one fan the Powercolor card is sensitive to case ventilation, those that complain of noise/temperatures usually have less than brilliant case cooling-it's particularly useful to have strong front intake fans.
In a decent case the 7870LE/XT runs about 75-80C under heavy load, which is warm but by no means excessively hot.
Also look out for 'on offer' HD7870s, it's the same basic card as the R9 270x and the GHz edition is only a fraction off the R9s pace.
Some shopping sites: Aria, Dabs, CCL, Ebuyer, Scan, Overclockers, Pixmania and Amazon...Amongst others.
As always, check the installed power supply can feed the upgraded card.

Well the 270x version is only slightly more expensive (around £10) but if they are the same card then I guess I may as well go with the non x version.
I was also thinking about getting the Radeon HD 7870 XT, which I read is supposed to have similar performance to the 79** series, however the only one which is in my price range is from powercolor (£140) which i've heard can get hot.

I've got the zalman z11 plus (including only the fans it came with), do you think i will have adequate cooling for this card? And if so, would you say that the 7870xt would be the best choice?

Yes.
Without a doubt the 7870XT is the fastest under consideration here and £140 is in R9 270 territory for pricing. Bang per quit it's the clear winner so if you can find one it's a sound purchase, if not, the R9 270X (or R9 270 plus some overclock on your part ;) ) or GTX660 are not a great step down.
I've always hated AMD for releasing the 7870XT, they did so just a week after I bought my 7950. There will no be a 5 minuet hate...HATE!...HATE!..HATE!

I would suggest the MSI 270X Hawk - Great performance and a nice twin frozr cooler + the fact that it should allow for a nice overclock and performance gain. I just wanted to put my two cents in as I have been looking at 270s and 270Xs a lot the past few weeks ( for mining though)

ok thanks for the help.
Are there any graphics cards at the £170-80 mark which would be worth paying the bit extra for?

edit: just found that the 7870 xt has been discontinued, so would you suggest getting the 270x or the gtx 660? Also is the 760 worth the extra money?

I would say that I personally would go for the 270X - even though I am a Nvidia guy. I would think that if you do go for the GTX line the 760 will have a bit more base performance and a bit of tweaking of the tech features ( like the auto clocking)

R9 270X is 10% faster than GTX 660 .
GTX 760 is 12.4% faster than R9 270X .
all these 3 cards are good
i think that GTX 760 is worth the money

The R9 270X isn't 10%faster than the gtx 660 its like 5% and in some games they perform identical And The GTX 760 if you can get a good deal is worth the diff in cash its about 21% than both the r9 and the 660
