GTX 770 running at 59 degrees at Idle

Dear All,

I have recently purchased a GTX 770 and I am concerned about the idle operating temperature. The card runs at 59 degrees with the stock fan set to 27% in MSI Afterburner. If I increase the fan speed to 40% I can get the temperature down to 49 degrees and with the fan set to 100% I get a GPU temperature of 37 degrees. During game play (i.e. Max Payne 3 at 1080p all settings maxed) the card sits around 80 degrees with the fan at 60% which I'm happy with. So I'm confused why the idle temperature is so high. I don't want to run my fan faster at idle due the noise it makes. Do you think this is normal or maybe I have a problem with the card? Many thaks in advance for any help here.

My systems is as follows:

Motherboard - P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
CPU - i5 2500k with stock cooler not running overclocked
PSU - Cosaur CX600
Case - Zalman Z9 series
Graphic card - GTX 770 MSI stock version (i.e. one fan)
RAM - 8 gb
Case cooling - Three fans sets to suck air in from the bottom front of the case and expel it from the top back.

I've played around with a few fan configuration and not found much effect. I'm going to get some better fans for the case. The trouble is that the GTX 770 card is so big it really blocks the air flow in the case and I haven't figured out a way round yet.

That's what I was thinking. I just wanted to see if others with a stock cooler were experiencing similar temperatures. Just want to figure out if I need to send the card back or not. Thanks

Since its a stock card and uses the blower style cooler, the air flow is not a MAJOR effect on its temps, though it does play some role feeding cool air into that card. Even still you need to make sure that you are feeding enough ambient air into the case while exhausting the hot air out from your CPU and other components out of your case, as the cooler on the GPU will exhaust the GPU hot air on its own.

What case do you have?

Thats actually a decent case, are you running the bottom and front intake fans? As well as the rear and top exhausts? If you are I'd say replace that GPU with another one if you're still within the RMA window. If the second one comes in and is having the same issues than you can start looking at your case and probably upgrading it.

I noticed there is room for 2 fans at the top, 1 rear, 1 bottom, 1 front and 1 side panel. The setup of those can make difference on your GPU, but not that drastic, as it should be idling in the lower 30s. Just RMA it and see how the new card works, its the least hassle option in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the advice I'll do that.

I noticed a very strange thing. While my GPU usage was 0% my power consumption was 27%. I don't have a clue what is the cause of this and probably a question for another thread. But I managed to get the power consumption down to 8% by uninstalling and re-installing the NVIDIA drivers (v332.21) and now my idle temperature is sitting at a respectable 33 degrees with the fan operating at its lowest setting. So it looks like there is no cooling problem with the card at all I just need to figure out what is causing this increased power consumption with no GPU load and I suspect that is more likely to be software than hardware related.

Thanks again for your help.

What if anything at all do you have running when you're checking your power useage? Even at idle you will have some sort of GPU usage/ power consumption. Here is what mine looks like right now

I think it's a software issue, possibly you have some spyware or other mailcious software that is making your gpu work harder - what is your gpu speed idle?

I watch my gpu because sometimes when i surf the web I notice that my gpu speed increases for no reason and than reset my browser.

Don't leave many windows open.

Thanks, mine is looking like that now. I'll keep an eye on it and try to figure out what was loading the card to 27%.
