Should I go from windows 7 to windows 8.1

Solution
do not throw the money on windows 8 is not worth it. stick with 7 pro. unless you want fancy visuals and a messy menu on 8

It's a good OS, but not worth the money to spend upgrading from 7 to 8, there just isnt enough that you will be getting to be worth the money. If you needed to buy a brand new OS then I would recommend 8, but I wouldnt recommend spending money on upgrading from 7 to 8, save your money

since the metro UI can be skipped altogether, do you guys still think going to 8.1 is a bad thing? Are there a lot of compatibilty issues or something? From what i read, win8 is a bit smoother, boots faster, copies files faster, takes less space on install (positive when using a low capacity SSD), the rest is almost a copy of win 7. It's also supposed to be more secure.

I didn't have a legit version of win7 (only OEM that came pre-installed), so i bought win 8.1 (student version, so only payed €60). Didn't see the use to pay (more) for a 4year old OS that is basically the same except for the UI.

On the other hand, if you already have a legit win7, i might just wait and see what win9 brings, its rumored to be out somewhere in 2015.

The compatibility issues are often relating to driver issues not yet fixed or issues that the program had before 8. There are some programs that I have had trouble with on 8 that worked fine on 7, such as the odd game here and there, but I havent had much trouble overall. I suppose some people use the start menu more than I do, as I generally just use the desktop to launch all the programs that I need. I personally find this (8) start menu a little less awkward for the way that I use it.

I do feel that it boots faster overall, but I'm slightly biased as I also have better hardware than I did with my 7 computer. Still, 8 does feel a bit quicker to me.

Getting 8.1 is definitely a good thing. I don't see the point of upgrading from 7 because for many intents and purposes it looks, feels, and even acts similar. Microsoft still supports it. It is perfectly stable. And it would cost money you could put to other computer parts buying an OS you don't need. But if you want to spend the money to upgrade or you need to buy a new OS then 8.1 is usually my recommendation
