Okay I was set on the msi gtx 760 hawk although now seeing the new r9 280x cards I'm torn between the two..
I want to run games at there highest settings 1920x 1080 (WoW, BF4, Rome 2 total war)

These are the 2 cards, there is £16 between the two -
R9 280x

Gtx 760 hawk

Which is the best???

Solution
but bear in mind something, they are sold out everywhere ( on order=waiting for stock) and where it sells for like £300 is the same cards as these but they have it and they can put bigger price on them as people will buy them
Anyway
270X= GTX 760
280x= GTX 770
Go for 280X it would worth it, but I would say wait for maxwell, new series of Nvidia GPUs, as you could get a 280x as soon as maxwell will come out probably

Thanks for your replies!
I know that the stock R9 280x out performs the stock gtx 760, I was just curious about these 2 particular models.
As I saw R9 280x models range from the gigabytes £226 model to £300+ models.
Would gigabytes r9 280x still be worth paying the extra £16 over the msi gtx 760 hawk?
Also I know msi 's gtx 760 hawk is of very good quality parts, good cooling etc being the top card of its range, is the gigabyte r9 280x a good quality card even though it's only £226?
