Using an amd athlon II x2 270 3.4ghz and an asus m5a78l-m/usb3 m/b have overclocked to 4ghz stable with stock cooling and 32 degrees idle which seems pretty good. The board automatically changes the other parameters with each clock speed. To save a lot of trial and error, has anyone any idea what final speed can be achieved with this setup. I have an arctic freezer pro on standby if required.

I wouldn't go any higher. That MB is not designed for massive overclcocking. That's a real good O/C you have now. Hope your MB holds out. What are your temps at stress? That is more important that idle.

With time on my hands I decided to have another go and am now running at 4.2 Ghz stable. I fitted the Arctic freezer 7 pro x64 and now have idle temp 26degrees ambient temp 19 degrees. Ran 100% processor usage for 6hours and max temp was 44 degrees. Anything above 4.2 becomes unstable. Fan speed set to constant 2200 max rpm.

Sounds like you have one of the more stable Athlon II X2 270s they produced. Must have been one of the high binned CPUs.
How many watts is it consuming at that speed when running 100%?
And what was your FSB (HT) speed you settled on? And what voltage?

I have a Phenom II X2 B59 sitting unused, which is the "business" version of the Phenom II X2 270.

Thanks. HWmonitor displays CPU watts. But I notice it is not consistent. Some MBs it will show up and others not.
On the MB in my sig below, I get both watts and amps for the CPU. On my Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD3 AM3+ MB, nothing.
