When I turn my laptop on where the signal is usually there is a router sign with a Red Cross which states " not connected-No connections are available". It has nothing to do with the router as I can use the internet with other devices and when I try to troubleshoot it it says it could be the modem. I was wondering how I could rectify the problem, any suggestions? The laptop is a sony vail around 2 years old.

How are you trying to connect to the router? If wired, is the wire connected - if it is then change it for another to try. If wireless, check wireless adapter is switched on and SSID access details are successfully entered. Failing that, check your drivers and update / install as required.
