New router cannot see switch

I have a Netgear WNR1000 router that has LAN connections to my PC and NAS. A third LAN port is connected to an Ethernet wall plate. At the other end of the Ethernet run (about 6m) a Trendnet TEG-S50g gigabit switch is connected to the wall plate and from this switch I get internet to a TV and a Marantz media player. All works fine.
I have just bought an ASUS RT-56U router, which, unlike the Netgear, has gigabit LAN ports. Although my PC and NAS again work perfectly, the ASUS cannot connect via the wall plates to the switch. If I run an Ethernet cable direct from ASUS to switch (i.e. not using wall plate Ethernet run) the switch connects and the TV etc. receive internet. This suggests a problem with the wall plate to wall plate Ethernet run but the Netgear router works perfectly over this cable run.
I'm baffled. Can anyone help please?

Hi
All I can think of is that the wall plates have been wired as crossover connections.
Some routers auto adapt to crossover cables and some do not perhaps the Asus is one of the latter.
If this is the case a crossover ethernet cable between the Asus and the wall will rectify it.

I've now got hold of a crossover adapter and tried it out. No joy I'm afraid. And the Netgear router didn't auto-adapt either.

Well, it was a good theory while it lasted, sigh ...

I would pull the wall plates and make sure first you have all 4 pairs. Then be very sure the pairs are properly connected to the right pins. Normally this is color coded so its simple to be sure they match. I would remove and repunch them down just to be sure they are properly terminated.

Most the time when gig has cable problems it will negotiate back to 100. In your case I suspect it can partially run at 1 speed so it never tries to run at 100m but it is not good enough to actually come up at 1g.

Be sure you have cat5e cable even though there is little you can do
