So my primary card idles at 28 degrees Celsius and the secondary card at 24 degrees.
When I benchmark using Unigine Valley 1.0 the primary tops at 78 degrees with the fans running at 100%. Yesterday I was in the test range on Battlefield 4 and the primary card all of a sudden froze up. I'm assuming it reached max operating temp. But I watched it closely and it never hit 85 degrees.
I have plenty of air moving through the case and have 2 fans blowing directly on the two cards. So how can I keep the cards cooler without buying an aftermarket cooler or switching to water cooling?

Solution
In a sli rig, the top card will run hotter.
That is because it has less access to cool air.
But, graphics cards do run hot and they are built to do so.
85c. is not all that hot.

Blowing air onto the cards is not all that helpful. It is more important to get hot air out of the case asap.

As a test, take the side covers off and direct a house fan at the innards. If that fixes your problem, you have a case cooling issue.

Another possibility is the psu. Your unit is not top quality and may not be delivering it's advertised power. Can you test with a stronger or better quality psu?
