Hey all, I've been a competitive/die-hard gamer for a very long time. I know most of the computer hardware except I have never used an internal sound card before.

I already own SteelSeries Siberia V2 headset with USB (external) sound card. So, I recently ordered Creative Sound Blaster Z (SB1500) just to see if the sound would be any better and more enhanced. I've read online that internal sound card is better than USB external sound card, right? Will my current headset have any issue with the sound card? If yes, what kind of gaming headset do you suggest then?

Also, what's the difference between PCIe x1, x4, x8 and x16 slots for sound cards? Which one would be really ideal? PCIe x16 (I have 2 slots) is the only slot being used for my GTX 760 2GB video card.

Thanks for your time to read this.

The Sound Blaster Z is considerably better and offers more flexibility than the USB card bundled with Steelseries. For movies and music the soundblaster would offer better audio. But if only used for gaming, the creative virtual surround may not really offer any positonal audio benefits over the Steelseries virtual surround.

The Creative Z comes with a microphone, allowing you to buy a nice set of dedicated headphones which can be much better for music than gaming headsets.

Modern internal soundcards plug into any PCI "express" slot, x1, x8, x16, etc. Older internal soundcards pluged into PCI "not express" slots, which are obsolete and no longer used by modern motherboards.

I find the Z a good card - I went for the OEM version as I didn't need the mic and it was a bit less expensive. The "Scout" mode is good but I have only tried it with 5.1 speakers and not headphones
