Can't find sound driver in laptop, or sound to work.

Here is the situation which I seem to have found myself in:

I was given a Win XP laptop (Toshiba Satellite R15-S822) to clean and reinstall the OS for. I reinstalled XP SP3 on it with no problem, and installed what I thought were all the necessary drivers.
The problem turned out to be sound, which wasn't working. (Keep in mind that sound was working before reinstalling) In Device Manager, I found "Realtek AC97" under Sound Devices with the yellow caution sign, which meant I needed to update it or reinstall it. I tried both, and they didn't give any results. I was told the update failed.
I thought this must be a faulty installation, and thought I'd start over by reinstalling the OS again. I did that, and reinstalled from the Toshiba website what I determined to be necessary drivers. I went to device manager this time, only to find that the audio driver (Realtek ac97) is missing. So, I cannot update or reinstall this.

Can someone give a hand here or help illuminate what I'm doing wrong? I'm kind of at the end of my rope here, after having worked on this pesky thing for more than 2 weeks.

No, and that was one of the mistakes I did. I didn't think it'd be this hard to find the original drivers.
