I'm upgrading an old system. I wouldn't mind dropping the price down a little keeping most of the power, but here's my initial upgrades with what I think is the biggest bang for the buck:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K ($230)
Motherboard: Asus Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150 ($172)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 2x8GB DDR3-1866 ($160)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB ($340)
Total: ~$900

What do you think? See anything that you might tweak? I wouldn't mind dropping the price a bit but not to a point of sacrificing much power or sustainability.

If interested, this is the current build w/ the rest of the components:
PSU: CoolMax 700W CUG-700B ATX
SSD: OCZ-Vertex3 120GB SSD (SATA 6GB/s)
HSS: 640GB Western Digital (SATA 3GB/s)
Optical: Lite-ON Black 12X BD-R
Case: Antec P180 Silver
Monitor: DELL U2713HM - 2560 x 1440
[strike]Motherboard: Gigabyte 965P-DS3[/strike]
[strike]CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600[/strike]
[strike]Video Card: PNY GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB[/strike]
[strike]Memory: 4x1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR 800[/strike]

Good ideas! I'm definitely not going to be overclocking it at first; I was thinking having that available would be beneficial but if it's far enough out upgrading to an overclockable i7 might be the move then anyway.
