My motherboard has an 8 pin slot for the CPU connector, but the PSU has a fixed 4+4pin ATX 12V/EPS 12V. Am I able to put both of the 4 pins in the slot to power it?

Yes, that is the design of the connector. Most 4+4 pin separate. I imagine yours does too. But the EPS connector is not the same key pattern as the ATX 12V

What is the make/model of your PSU?

I have an xfx pro series modual 650w PSU and it does come with a 8pin cpu connector but it isn't long enough to route behind the case, while the 4+4 pin connector is long enough. Although the 8 pin connector will still reach (just not when it is routed behind)
So for cable management I would much rather use the 4+4 pin connector

The 4+4 should be the correct cable; the ATX +12V. The reason it is split into 2 x 4 is because some MBs only have a 4 pin header. The 8 pin EPS connector, while the same electrically, has a slightly different key pattern. Although it too may still fit.
