Core 2 Duo E6550 (4M Cache, 2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Core 2 Quad Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.44 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Is the quad core processor faster/better despite a lower speed at the FSB?

yeah I agree getting an old core 2 duo in 2014 is absurd. Save your money and just play on low settings on games till you can at least get an fx6300 6 core and mobo, or hell even a cheap mobo and i3 would be a hell of an improvement. The core 2 architecture is just too old and not good for games these days, it would probably struggle on low settings.

Honestly, I would just get a decent Haswell/Ivy I3, Core2 CPUs' are pretty much obsolete by now and I3 is cheap as a dirt and is better, so unless you are like getting those gifted to you, I see no point in taking them.

Finally, there are some awesome cheap AMD processors around too.

Thanks for your advice. This was just a fixer. The Core 2 Duo came with the machine and a friend of mine gave me a Core 2 Quad from another old machine with a motherboard malfunction. I'll swap out the Duo for the Quad. My next build is going to be much more robust, probably an i7 if I decide to stick with Intel.
