Hi all,

Just been offerred a "free update" from an out of stock Asus z87 Pro ATX to the Asus z87 Expert model

My question is: Is this a good upgare or an upgrade at all?

And what features do I possibly miss out on/gain?

Regards

You can check the differences here: http://promos.asus.com/us/z87/comparison/

Basically, you get one more PCI-E 3.0 (instead of a 2.0) and thunderbolt, but "only" 8 phase CPU power instead of 12.

It is a minor upgrade in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply,

I went ahead with the deal, Researching online seemed to point towards the differences between 12 phase and 8 outweighing the gains (and the fact that this way I'll still get a motherboard rather than a refund)

Would you be able to explain just what I can use the thunderbolt port for?

Thunderbolt is basically an external PCI-E connector. It is mostly used by Apple for external displays, but you could connect almost anything with it, however its uses are quite limited right now.

As for the 12 phases CPU power, unless you want to do some very intense overclocking, you won't miss it. It should allow for more stability when under stress. If you want to read more about it, here is a good article: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-The-Motherboard-Voltage-Regulator-Circuit/616/4
