I'm in the middle of my new build which consists of :
Cpu - i5 4670k
psu -Corsair cm750w modular
cpu cooler -Corsair h80i
Mobo- z87 g43
case - bitfenix shinobi windowed

i found the sapphire r9 290 tri-x for around £317 ex.vat which is the same price i can get a gtx 780 windforce 3x oc but what is the better option for my build since they are both the same price.

I'd also get the 780... Simply because it runs cooler, consumes less power, OCs better, has better drivers and has about the same performance as the R9 290. If they are at the same price, I don't see why should you get the R9 290.

If I was you, I would pick the GTX 780... Why? Well I am a Nvidia fan, but truth be told, the GTX 780 overclocks like hell, Nvidia has a little bit better driver support, ShadowPlay, G-Sync, some other little features... But with the R9 290 you have Mantle, which can provide boost in some games by up to 45% and also TrueAudio... And the R9 290 is a little bit faster than the GTX 780...

[strike]Go with whatever has nothing to do with Sapphire would be my advice, so in this case go with the 780. I'm still waiting for my BF4 game code from sapphire with no resolution date. I hope I never have to return the card to be fixed. Plus after all the vague promises of offers, free games promotions and things I would not hold my breath for Mantle. [/strike]

problem was resolved. The R9 290 Tri-X is awesome.

I'm using a gigabyte r9 290 oc windforce, temperature is great too, running games at max setting and temp is under 70 for hours of playing.

Was a fan of nvidia but I find out that radeon do it for me since. Better shaders and pixels.

Mantle will surely kill the directx and Physicx.

I'm using a Zotac GTX 770 AMP! and it runs anything I throw at it (no I don't have Crysis 3) at 60fps (adaptive V-sync), at 1080p.

Most of the most recent games (AC4 Black Flag, Batman Arkham Origins, Splinter Cell Blacklist) utilize Nvidia tech.

The prospect of the G-Sync, which has been reviewed by folks, is also great.

Yes, yes, Nvidia turned me into a fanboy. Okay. Go for the 780.

Yea, Mantle was a very tempting consideration too, when I was picking between 280X and 770. But I've read somewhere that DirectX will be updating soon, and will be quite similar to Mantle.

That's hard, DX can't be a low-level api, if it is it has to have different low-level api's for each gpu arch which is not what DX aims for. DirectX primarily aims to provide a nice and clean API with stunning visuals which can be used to develop graphics applications/games independent of the underlying GPU hardware while mantle is a low-level api especially meant GCN based GPU's only and has the same visuals but uses very low-level of abstraction which lets us get a very good performance without any or minimal intervention of CPU.
Both have their strong points and each of them targets a different set of problems, DX targets portability on various GPU whereas Mantle targets performance and removing cpu bottleneck on only GCN cards.

I heard the same thing about OpenGL 5.0 but I doubt it will not be close to mantle'e low-level abstraction.

And also, ref 290/290x are bad for their heat & noise. If Tri-X is under consideration I would go for it without any question since it can overclock like hell, in a review I saw the Tri-X R9 290 was overclocked to 1200 MHz core and 6600 MHz (effective) memory (it may look less than the 7+ GHz that nVidia cards do easily, but keep in mind 290/290x have 512-bit memory, so higher bandwidth even at lower speeds), this overclock brought the Tri-X R9 290 to the top, even above 780 Ti (of-course non-overclocked)

I was a Nvidia Fan until I found out that Nvidia can only support 3 monitors in surround mode even though some cards have 4 ports; Surround Mode max = 3 monitors. AMD will support up to 6 monitors (using Eye Infinity) but limited to the ports available unless you can get an mst to daisy chain monitors. However, some AMD cards by various companies limits the monitors to 3, be careful on your choices.

I vote the r9 290 I used to be an all out nvidia guy but once the r9 290x was released with more performance than a titan and almost half the price I started looking at the 2 companies unbiased. Here's the difference. AMD definitely has more performance for the money. Nvidia has more features like gsync, shadowplay, Nvidia 3d (which is better than AMDs 3d), physx etc. But let's face it. Do you really need those? Gsync and 3d monitors are expensive and not really worth the price and they aren't ever going to drop that much in price. When you are going to get an expensive card I would go looking for the features I'd look at how long it'll be able to play the latest games in ultra at a great frame rate. The r9 290 is definitely faster and with mantle will take you father over time with being able to handle the current games. Don't go for Nvidia. The only reason its the same price is because they know the fanboys will buy it and not consider AMD. I think the r9 290 is the best choice

I'm also debating with the same question, which one to get.... the mantle API appeals to me quite a lot to be honest.
