This might be in the wrong category, who knows, but I suspect it's a mobo issue. Here's what happened.
Shortly after Christmas, I started having problems with my monitor restarting suddenly while my PC was in use. It was quite annoying, but there was no lasting damage. I tried to change some power settings and such to see if that would help, but alas, it did not. It didn't happen too often (once every couple days) so I didn't worry too much.
The problem escalated late last week when it would start spontaneously 'sleeping' - regardless of whether or not I was present, everything would turn off except for the lights and fans. It wouldn't wake up, and my only option was to do a hard reboot. I tried a few more software changes but had resigned to the fact that it was probably a hardware issue. Research said it was probably my mobo or graphics card.
I returned home from dinner last night to find it had 'slept'. Holding down the power button for a hard restart didn't work - I had to shut the battery off. When I turned it back on, a few fans started, my temperature screen displayed, and it sounded like the PC was trying to boot, but the monitor and peripherals never came to, the LEDs in the case never lit up, and it remained too quiet, like something wasn't working.
I don't really have any parts I could swap out to test for errors. My PC is custom-built and only 4 months old, so the parts are all still warrantied. I don't want to have to let the store run diagnostics and make me pay for their time - I would much prefer to isolate the faulty part to return on my own.

Here's some specs:
Motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme3
Processor: AMD FX-8350 4GHz
Graphics card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 Ti
PSU: Cosair CX600 - 600w
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600, 2 x 4GB
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

What works: Power button (for turn-on, anyway), graphics card lights up, case fans, disc drive, keyboard (backlighting only) and mouse light up, temperature display screen on case

What doesn't work: Heatsink fan, graphics card fan, LED lights inside the case, power button (battery needs to be flicked off)

Thanks in advance for your input.

It is a possibility that your motherboard is at fault however I am drawn towards an issue with the power supply. If you happen to have a spare pop it in and give it a try, if not we can try to rule it out based on other outcomes. I am also a little confused as to your battery setup, if you could post a picture of the battery mounted in the case and also try plugging the comp directly into the wall and the psu, we could test if the battery is the issue. I think that we should be able to fix this fairly quickly!
