My XPS420 power supply fan has become very noisy. I assume the bearings have/are failing.

While I have replaced many components within a computer, I have never replaced a power supply.

The procedure is easy, the questions I have is around the connectors.

Do I need to take inventory of the current connectors and find a new supply that has these connectors and meets the same 375W size? Dell offers this replacement at $115...crazy high and it isnt even in stock. Elsewhere these are listed all over the place and many prices..most refurbished but many are not Dell parts..e.g. replacements.

Do I take my current supply and walk into a Frys and find a replacement? or just do as I stated above?

Any other factors around the electrical ratings beyond just 375W?

thx

as a followup.

I found this as the specs for the connectors on my XPS420 power supply

This Power Supply has the following connectors:
1x 24 Pin and 1x 4 Pin Motherboard Connectors
1x 4 Pin Floppy Disk Drive Connector
1x 6 Pin Video Card Power Connector
1x IDE Connector
6x SATA Connectors

I found this on Frys.com that appears to be a replacement?

Are you only considering Frys, or would you be interested in buying from an online retailer like Newegg? That PSU would probably work, but it's not a very high quality PSU. I looked on Frys and they carry this PSU that has active PFC and is 80+ certified. It is a higher quality unit that the Thermaltake one and saves you a bit of money as well. :)

I am not tied to Frys, no. In fact, I found that Thermaltake PSU for a bit cheaper on Frys.

Unfortunately your suggestion isnt in stock at Frys or Newegg.

See this at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

It appears to be a match, but I had one question.

While the wattage is 380W vs. my stock 375W, the amperage ratings are a bit lower:

e.g.

Dell Antec
12V:18A 17A
5V:22A 20A

others are similar ...same A or a bit lower like above.

Is this OK?

The Antec 380W PSU would be a great replacement. It's a high quality PSU. You don't needed to worry about the amperage rating being slightly different. The most power hungry components in a computer use the 12v rail.

I got this power supply...and did post another thread but it was getting no attention.

So I thought i would continue this thread.

For some reason this PSU isnt working for my system. I re-checked all the connections many times but when I try to turn it on, I get a blinking amber power button (Dell manual states an incorrect internal connection) and only a flash from the miniview window on the top of the case.

I re-installed the Dell PSU in frustration to check if I did something else wrong and it booted up just fine. No issue.

Another forum did ask why I got an ATX PSU for a BTX case...the cables were long enough and I could get it secured, but it is a bit smaller.

Could there be issues with the voltage or amperage or any of the rails etc?

Do I just return this?

The ATX vs. BTX is really a non-issue as long as you were able to get all the connections plugged in correctly. Did you connect all 24-pins to the main connector? The Antec PSU has a 20+4 pin connector, so you have to make sure they are connected together to make a 24-pin plug. Did the 4-pin CPU power connector go all the way in until it clicked into place? It is keyed, so you should have only been able to put it in one way.

Yes. I double checked all connections and pushed them all down and even removed and reseated them. I will give even more attention to the 20+4 plug to be sure the 4 pin portion is pushed all the way down.

Before returning, as I dont know what I would re-order at this point, I will run through the entire uninstall/reinstall process again. Unless my unit itself is bad.

The Antec ended up being a bad unit. I returned it and found a great deal on a XFX Core Edition PRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply for $25 after rebate.

Installed it and computer has worked perfectly immediately.
