Hi,

My mum recently asked me to have a look at her netbook which she uses to do uni work, complaining that it was running very slowly.
I noticed immediately that the hard drive light was permanently on and went to have a look at Window's resource monitor and this is what I saw:

Showing that the hard drive is extremely active but not actually doing very much in terms of I/O (only 2 MB a second I/O)

I then ran a speed test thinking the hard drive was dying, but it showed a read/write speed of about 70 mb/s for both. The CPU and RAM usage are both well within acceptable numbers.

Is it still possible that the hard drive is dead - or could it be something else? I need some help here, I haven't had any luck after hours of fiddling around with it :(

Netbook System Specs
Samsung N220 Plus
Intel Atom N450 (1.66ghz, 2 Cores)
2gb RAM
250GB Samsung Hard Drive (Running in AHCI)
Windows 7 Starter Edition

Many Thanks,

Matt

The hard drive is only 6% fragmented on the system partition of the disk, so I didn't know if it would be worthwhile defragging it - will it actually make much difference?
